Let Me Help You Achieve Your Goal

Early Life and The Vietnam Mother Homeland

My life journey commences in the impoverished environs of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, Vietnam. In this setting, my neighbors comprised a diverse array of individuals, from prostitutes to gang members and hardworking manual laborers. Irrespective of their professions, everyone shared a common struggle—working tirelessly to eke out a survival in challenging circumstances. One vivid challenge etched into my memory revolves around the impact of illness and medical needs on an already precarious quality of life. During a period of illness, financial constraints prevented my mother from seeking professional medical assistance. Instead, we turned to pharmacists and retailers for guidance, placing implicit trust in their recommendations and prescriptions. The urgency to recover swiftly stemmed from the fact that my mother, was the primary breadwinner, needed to return to work promptly.

The most poignant episode involved my father's battle with asthma. A substantial portion of our family's income was allocated to procure medicines and fund doctor treatments. Tragically, our financial limitations reached a point where continued medical care became unaffordable. Consequently, my father spent his final days at home, passing away on a modest wooden bench in our living room.

These challenging experiences instilled two profound realizations early in my life—the paramount importance of health in achieving a high quality of life and a resolute desire to pursue a career in the medical field. Opting to become a physician assistant reflects my aspiration to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the health of others and contributing to an enhanced quality of life. My firsthand understanding of the physical, emotional, and financial challenges that individuals face serves as the driving force propelling me toward success within my chosen path

The New Opportunity and The American Dream

In the early 2000’s, my journey took me to the United States, and granting me the opportunity to be the first in my family to seek higher education, which I seized. This transition presented numerous academic challenges, primarily stemming from the rapid immersion into the American language and culture. Grappling with the intricacies of spoken English and confronting deficiencies in my reading skills became formidable hurdles, fostering a persistent sense of inadequacy.

One pivotal moment occurred during a history class while taking summer courses. The absence of PowerPoint presentations in lectures coupled with the daunting task of covering twenty-two chapters in four weeks intensified the academic demands. Each page consumed half an hour as I meticulously deciphered. unfamiliar words, delving into their meanings before rereading to grasp a comprehensive understanding. Contemplating the sheer effort required to meet the course demands spurred a realization — a need to devise more effective learning strategies. To surmount these substantial challenges, I adopted a multifaceted approach.

Recording all lectures allowed for repeated listening, reinforcing comprehension. Tackling the reading component involved strategic highlighting of main ideas, creation of personalized study guides, and seeking guidance from the professor for complex terms. Additionally, implementing a disciplined daily study schedule became integral to managing the workload. These experiences underscore my attributes of determination, hard work, and organizational prowess. The culmination of this perseverance manifested in me graduating with a A.S. in Biology from Orange Coast College and a subsequent B.S. in BioSci from the University of California, Irvine with in the following 2 years..

While also in College, I initiated my volunteer work at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, CA. A significant incident occurred when a natural gas smell permeated the facility, prompting an emergency evacuation. Despite being a volunteer, a charge nurse advised my departure for safety. However, witnessing patients left exposed to the elements in the parking lot on a frigid January night compelled me to act. Returning to the tumultuous emergency room, I gathered blankets and distributed them to patients. Furthermore, I assisted in the temporary relocation of patients from Maternity and the ICU to a third building on campus, ensuring their organization based on medical needs. Even after the gas leak was resolved, patients, including those from the ICU and Postop, remained outdoors in the cold night. Several hours later, the "all clear" announcement echoed through the facility.

My pride in providing warmth and support to patients, coupled with efforts to calm both patients and their families during this chaotic incident, served as a profound inspiration. This experience cemented my unwavering desire to contribute meaningfully to the medical field, transcending the role of a bystander to that of an active participant in the well-being of individuals facing health challenges. The realization that my actions could make a tangible difference ignited a passion that continues to propel my aspirations within the medical realm.

Achieving the objective of becoming a physician assistant holds the promise of enabling me to assist individuals facing circumstances with which I am intimately acquainted. As a future physician assistant, my commitment extends beyond clinical settings to volunteering at free or low-cost clinics that cater to underserved communities. When selecting a practice to join, I will prioritize those that actively contribute free services to such communities, ensuring that my professional endeavors directly benefit those in need within my community. This commitment reflects my deep gratitude towards the nation that afforded me a second chance, a quality life, educational opportunities, the pursuit of medical school, and an ongoing avenue to actualize all my aspirations and dreams.
